O'Neil tried out for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still in high school. Her performance on the show impressed jury, and she received a promotion to the 100th round. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. However, she experienced significant defeats during the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put to the bottom three or the bottom two spots, respectively. After two more breathtaking performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil along with Rex Goudie advanced to the competition's final two, judge Werner said that newspaper headlines would read O'Neil defeated Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the youngest winner of the show's time . O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
