O'Grady was born to Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as a financial advisor. She was raised in Wheaton and was a student at Wheaton North School. She was a graduate in 1981. Prior to shifting into Los Angeles, she appeared in several commercials. O'Grady began her career modeling in Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She debuted on screen in 1988 in the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was then offered the main character in ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany.
